Theater - Director (Hiring Immediately)

Job Title: Theatre Arts - HS Wage/Hour Status: Exempt/Contracted Reports To: Principal/Fine Arts Director Pay Grade/Days: Teacher / 187 Dept./School: Assigned Campus Date Revised: April 2026 Primary Purpose Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the fine arts subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies aligned with the T.E.K.S. for fine arts and interpersonal skills to function successfully in society. Recruit and develop students in academic and extracurricular theatre/drama performances, UIL one‑act play, and other assigned competitions annually as directed by the District Director of Fine Arts. Qualifications Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree from an accredited university. Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for subject and level assigned. Demonstrated competency in the fine arts academic subject area assigned. Experience: At least one year of student teaching or approved internship experience. Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of subjects assigned. General knowledge of theatre arts TEKS, curriculum and instruction. Ability to instruct students and manage behavior. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of UIL rules and regulations pertaining to theatre arts, One‑Act Play, Theatrical Design, and other contests. Major Responsibilities and Duties Develop and present subject matter in accordance with TEA guidelines, district curriculum, and board policies, maintaining written evidence of preparation as required. Plan and implement lesson plans that utilize appropriate materials and activities tailored to the diverse learning styles, needs, and accommodations of all assigned students. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing and use results to plan instructional activities. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Coordinate with other theatre teachers, the district fine arts director, and staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s). Use technology to enhance the teaching/learning process. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits. Assume responsibility for directing plays, scenes and performances, along with any extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal and district director of fine arts. Be a positive role model for students; support the school district’s mission. Foster a safe, productive learning environment by managing student behavior according to the Student Code of Conduct while supporting their physical, social, and emotional development. Exercise professional judgment in protecting students and school property while actively contributing to the selection of instructional materials and equipment. Foster and maintain positive, professional relationships and communication with all stakeholders through clear, accurate information sharing and proactive conferencing. Participate in staff development activities and professional conferences. Keep informed of and follow state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required. Attend and participate in faculty meetings, PLCs, and serve on staff committees as required. Coordinate with district fine arts leadership and theatre colleagues to align curriculum continuity, manage program infrastructure and inventory, and facilitate seamless student transitions between campus levels. Be active in professional organizations related to theatre arts. Maintain accurate knowledge of Texas Fine Arts TEKS regarding theatre arts. Assist feeder pattern and district theatre arts instructors with productions, rehearsals, recruiting and contests. Coordinate and supervise all after‑school rehearsals and events, ensuring student safety during activities and while awaiting transportation. Monitor and enforce student eligibility requirements while guiding activities to maintain a positive professional image for the department, school, and district. Participate in UIL One‑Act Play, mainstage musical, fall shows, UIL Theatrical Design, and spring shows. Conduct practices outside the academic school day to provide adequate preparation for performances, shows, and design. Manage all department finances, including fundraisers, royalties, and fees, ensuring accurate record‑keeping and timely submission of travel and purchase requests. Coordinate with fellow directors to establish a master calendar for productions and events. Oversee assigned responsibilities during rehearsals and performances; must be present at all performances during the run of a show. Collaborate with fellow directors to manage production budgets and oversee systematic strike and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Sponsor the International Thespian Society or equivalent honors program, managing all aspects of field trips and providing supervision for the duration of all travel. Work cooperatively with fellow director(s) to sponsor the high school chapter of the International Thespian Society or other theatre honors program. Work with counselors to monitor and help solve issues regarding student placement into appropriate theatre courses, registration, and scheduling. Work cooperatively with fellow director(s) to oversee all working decisions and events of the ITS Troupe Officers. Responsible for directing and/or assisting with direction of select productions each season. Serve as staff responsible for PAC use in conjunction with the PAC Manager. Maintain the upkeep of the theatre shop and campus PAC and other related theatre spaces. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise any assigned teacher aide(s). In cooperation with the PAC Manager, assist with the oversight of student workers. Working Conditions Maintain emotional control under stress. Treat other directors with respect and maintain a united front in front of students, parents, and community. Ability for frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move small to large objects as necessary, including but not limited to textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom and theatre equipment.
