SUMMARY

A Special Olympics Texas Community Outreach Director supports community based programming by identifying Special Olympics Texas programming needs and connecting those opportunities by engaging community leaders, corporate and civic organizations, ensuring premier competition campaign experiences for the athletes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build the capacity of the area(s) responsible for by connecting and engaging the community to all aspects of programming campaigns;
  • Have oversight on all programming campaigns with the emphasis on community connectivity engagement
  • Involve the community in planning and execution of all campaigns , adhering to budget requirements;
  • Develop Games Management Committees (GMTs) to lead the development of program campaigns and fundraising campaign efforts in the area;
  • Integrate fundraising into area programs campaigns ;
  • Recruit athletes, coaches, unified partners, and volunteers;
  • Work with professional sports teams and sport governing bodies to develop and implement sport clinics, training, and community outreach opportunities for athletes and coaches;
  • Guide volunteers to manage area pages for website and social media;
  • Develop sport calendars with assistance from regional staff;
  • Assist with Regional and State competitions as needed;
  • Recruit area Law Enforcement and support Law Enforcement Torch Run events;
  • Identify and train coaches in Special Olympics programming;
  • Integrate Unified Champion Schools® goals into Area goals while assisting UCS staff in school recruitment, retention, and event production;
  • Recruit and increase athlete participation through school based programs and adult athletes within the community.
  • Communication of organizational goals to regional teams which must include, but are not limited to, best practices, innovation, retention and recruitment.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED SKILLS

Passion for Special Olympics Texas

Screening: Must pass Criminal and National Sex Offender Registry background screening (Required for all staff)

Education: College degree or equitable experience in non-profit programming; emphasis on recreation, disability issues, sports programming and management a plus.

Experience: Non-profit experience; Community Organizing; youth and adult sports programming, event planning; budgeting, previous experience with Unified Sports®, Special Olympics a plus.

Knowledge: G Suite; Sports rules; event management; Disability programming.

Skills: Strong organizational skill with the ability to manage multiple projects; effective time management, verbal and written skills, public speaking and customer service.

Work Schedule: Full time 40+ hours per week; This position’s work schedule will be determined by the demands of the position and may include evenings and weekends. Flexible time is available with prior approval of the supervisor.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 20lbs, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; frequently required to stand, reach with hands and arms through full range of motion.

Transportation: Must have a good driving history, valid Texas driver’s license and current insurance.
