About the Humane Society of Central Texas

The Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCTX) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to building a Central Texas where every animal gets a second chance and every family has the support they need to stay together. Since transitioning to a foster-based rescue model in late 2024, HSCTX operates without a traditional shelter facility, delivering lifesaving outcomes through a foster network, Human-Animal Support Services (HASS), a Pet Supply Pantry, and community outreach programs (e.g., microchipping events, adoption events). We are seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth, which includes strengthening our fundraising infrastructure, managing our budget with precision, and deepening our community partnerships. We are an organization that is entirely donor-funded, HSCTX depends on strong leadership for a strong financial foundation.

Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of HSCTX, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. The ED provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership across the organization, with a primary emphasis on fund development, grant writing and management, and budget stewardship. As HSCTX’s primary ambassador, the ED will cultivate strong relationships with donors, community leaders, partner organizations within animal welfare, and local government to advance our mission. This is a hands-on leadership role in a small, collaborative team. The ideal candidate is visionary, highly organized, and energized by building systems, community partnerships, and a culture of compassion.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development

• Design and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy and diversify fundraising streams including major gifts and bequests, individual donors, corporate sponsorships, and special events
• Increase and diversify revenue streams, strengthening fundraising and marketing strategies, expanding philanthropic, corporate, and community partnerships
• Identify, research, write, and manage grant applications from government, foundation, and corporate funders
• Build and maintain a donor database; develop stewardship, recognition, and donor retention practices
• Cultivate and sustain relationships with major donors, foundations, and community partners
• Serve as HSCTX’s public face at community events, in media appearances, and with key stakeholders
• Track and report on fundraising metrics and progress toward annual revenue goals

Financial Management & Budgeting

• Develop, manage, and monitor the annual organizational budget in partnership with the Board of Directors
• Maintain sound fiscal controls, accurate record-keeping, and compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
• Provide regular financial reporting, analysis, and projections to the Board at monthly meetings
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable and coordinate with external bookkeepers and accounting firm, as needed
• Identify and pursue strategies to diversify and grow revenue streams

Leadership & Operations

• Directly supervise a small staff of 4–6 employees; cultivate a positive, mission-aligned workplace culture
• Oversee daily organizational operations including foster network coordination, volunteer programs, HASS services, and the Pet Supply Pantry
• Develop and implement organizational policies and procedures
• Partner closely with the Board on governance, strategic priorities, and organizational development
• Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal nonprofit regulations

Community Engagement & Advocacy

• Build and sustain relationships with regional animal welfare organizations, shelters, and rescue coalitions
• Advocate for animal welfare in the Waco community and with local and county government
• Strengthen HSCTX’s visibility, brand, and reputation as a trusted community resource
• Represent HSCTX on relevant community boards, coalitions, and public forums

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of nonprofit or business leadership experience
• Demonstrated track record of success in fundraising, development, grant writing, and grant portfolio management
• Strong command and understanding of financial statements (e.g., profit and loss statements), including experience developing and overseeing organizational budgets
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable serving as a public spokesperson
• Experience managing and motivating a small, mission-driven team
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with the Board, donors and potential donors, volunteers, and community partners
• Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years nonprofit management or knowledge
• Passion for animal welfare with experience in animal rescue, shelter, or related nonprofit environments
• Familiarity with foster-based or HASS organizational models
• Experience with donor management software
• Knowledge of the Central Texas philanthropic community
• Certification in fund development (CFRE) or nonprofit management is a plus

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 annually, DOE
• Classification: Full-time, exempt position under the FLSA
• Bonus: Potential for a merit-based bonus tied to organizational fundraising and programmatic outcomes
